Here's a picture of some Ampex 440 4 track recorders. The Iron Butterfly liner notes speculate that models similar to this were used to record at the Fillmore East.

A vintage 1968 ad for the Ampex AG 440.

NPR reviews the new Iron Butterfly Fillmore 68 CD: http://www.npr.org/2011/11/25/142311605 ... lmore-east

The review, by Milo Miles, is a bit fluffy and lacks real substance.

All of our faves should have such a great live recording!

Let's hope the recording Graham's people apparently made of the Doors at Fillmore East in March 68 surfaces!!

All the Fillmore tapes are archived somewhere in a vault...or most of them, I hear, so it will take time, but let's hope not toooo long. Those tapes won't last forever .....even in a temperature controlled vault!

We don't know & they aren't telling, but the gentleman who bought the hundreds of tapes from Bill Graham may have them.

I remember seeing the vault on 60 Minutes or somewhere.

Check it out. Someone uploaded a 15 minute live version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida from the 1968 Fillmore CD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tatcK3RA_PI

Surely whoever owns these tapes is aware that they will deteriorate, and is planning to have them digitized. Maybe that way something will leak.

I am quite sure it is impossible for a drummer to actually record a whole new set of rhythmtracks to a full concert within a reasonable timeframe.

I don´t know how long the concert at Fillmore is.

One hour?

One hour filled with a tempo fluctuating all over the place.

Add to that the actual mastering of the feel of the song and its changes.

Add to that the nuances and punctuations.

Maybe you could timecontrol the music in Protools, but then Jim would be off-rhythm.
We`s just joy-ridin'
