Will Jim's films ever be released?

We're lucky to have former Doors road manager Vince Treanor here to answer fan questions and share some of his memories. Ask Vince about anything related to the equipment The Doors used, stage set-ups, specific concerts, the band after Jim's death, and working on the Oliver Stone movie.

Will Jim's films ever be released?

Post by elektra »

Just curious if you have any information about the theatrical or DVD releases of Jim's films? Will we ever be able to see these films in high quality format?

Thanks

I don't think Vince would know that. I would go on the Doors forum and ask Jeff that question.

This is true. I am not associated with anything that the Doors own - Audio or Visual. They have tried to buy up, or otherwise obtain, as much material on the open market as possible wth a view of controlling everything that is used.

People like Frank Lisciandro, who created a vast amount of photos of both the group, group members individually and, naturally his freind Jim, has not acceeded to this process and his photos remain in his control.
Frank will, under the right circumstances, provide photos for personal use, even, on occasion, under the right circumstances, for a project which will be commercial.

I do not think that the Doors Management has that sort of generosity in mind.

Ask them directly. The answer may surprise you.

From the thousands of things you can read on the internet about HWY, it just basically appears to suck. You know how it is. We all have things we LOVE to do, but are not necessarily good at them. Me? I used to love to polevault, but I sucked (12 foot max in HS) :) . Jim's weaknesses were poetry and film. He seems to have loved them (based on my peripheral observations only, of course). The thing he was fucking GREAT at, he walked away from. His lyrics, of course, IMO, were some of the greatest goddamn lyrics I've ever read. And I'm not a blinded bombastic blower of Morrison.

I agree with you that Jim was no filmmaker, IMO. And he was a brilliant lyricist. But to say Jim's weakness was poetry really misses the point entirely. Jim wrote his own kind of poetry. He purposefully chose not to write in anykind of established meter or rhyme. It's the way he thought and chose to express himself. That doesn't make him a "great poet" or a mediocre poet. It simply establishes Jim's own, unique brand of creativy; a creativity that I associate just with him and no one else (and there are plenty of Morrison immitators!)

How true those words Nephron.

But Jim also had a way with the voice. I was really struck by the natural voice he had. Smooth, silky and yet at times, loud and forceful.

Why did he give it up for "Poetry" I have no answer really. I think he was influenced by what was going on around him and got carried away with his own inage as created by others.

Thanks Vince for your reponse. I'll ask on the other message board too. That would be Jeff Jampole, right?

I heard that the Feast of Friends may be released and thought you had been in some of that footage and might have been contacted about it.

So glad it's possible for us to ask you about these sorts of things and have such thoughful responses.

JIm had one of the greatest voices in Rock N Roll History. As a lead singer, he's right up there with Elvis, Robert Plant and Eddie Vedder. Of all his gifts, that might be the one that he squandered the most with abuse. But I'll tell you this, nobody would be talking about him as a poet, performer, writer, OR MYSTIC SHAMAN MADMAN if he wasn't born with a god given voice of voice for the AGES.

the Golden Voice

Post by vince »

Joriki:

One of the things that sent Jim into a dither was his failing voice.

They were in recording. perhaps Morrison Hotel. Jim could not seem to get the right sound in his voice. It was tough and scratchy. Husky might be a better description.

Jim tried several takes and things were just not working out. Paul Rothschild suggested that Jim might have "Nodules" on is vocal chords. Not to worry. They couls just burn them off.

Think about you being a singer and your producer suggests that someone should go nipping off your nodules with a hot poker. Just how calm would you be.

Ad to that drinking bouts, trouble with this "Girl Friend" a trial as a result of an Incident that was completely out of proportion.

People say that Jim was tired of performing. Those who do forget that he called John and conversed about returning and performing again. He did want to perform. After all, He may have been called a Poet but he made his money by singing and recording songs that Swept across the U.S. and then Europe, making him quite the famous figure.

But he was under a lot of strain from other events and situations. A trip to Europe would have put him out of reach of U.S. authorities. He would not have to think aboout noodling his nodules and he could calm down a bit. That was his stated purpose in gong there in the first place.

Is it not a bit of irony that the very voice that we all admire, the voice that gave a great many of the Doors "Softer" pieces the incredible sultery sound, was a major cause of stress for Jim. Trust me. He did not like Paul's casual comments at all.

Vince,
I am quite sure this is true. Jim's voice went through such a transformation in four years as to almost make it unrecognizable. His voice went through at least the transformation that his body did. There is no other example I can think of in Rock N Roll history where a guy's voice went so south, so quickly. Smoking and Drinking is terrible for Vocal Chords, and no doubt Jim had done a lot of damage to himself. He was given a stradivarius and he shit all over it. At 27, All the great Rock N Roll Singers were at there mature peak, but Jim was pretty much over. A true tragedy indeed.
