Summer 1966: unknown venue, Tempe, AZ (Love turned down an invitation to play there)

was probably the Fifth Estate in Tempe - the same place the Doors played in July of 1966.

The Fifth Estate was in Phoenix not in Tempe, so I don't think the venue was this, but who knows....

No, it was in Tempe - I recently visited the site of it, just north of 202 at Scottsdale and Curry. Greg Shaw just had it listed as Phoenix.

uhm...I don't know....I know (from google) that actually exists a nightclub called Anderson's Fifth Estate at 6820 East 5th Avenue in Tempe, but I don't know if is this the same Fifth Estate club where The Doors (and Alice Cooper, by the way) played in 1966. By the way, maybe you're right so I will update my "Love Family Tree - Performance List" with this new entry "Summer 1966: Fifth Estate (?), Temple, AZ". Thanks and sorry for my bad english but I'm Italian!

Great list, Bruno. I do see a few mistakes, though.

The Doors cancelled, but Love did perform at the Pasadena Civic on 6/2/67.

I'm not sure that Love actually performed during "Teen Time USA" at the Anaheim Convention Center in April of '68. I asked Johnny about it here...

Anderson's Fifth Estate was in Scottsdale, and they are different venues. Coincidentally, Robby Krieger performed at Anderson's in the early 2000s.

I did a bunch of research on Phoenix area clubs to establish the location of the Fifth Estate - it was in a shopping center at the northwest corner of Curry and Scottsdale in Tempe. The building is long gone, but that's where it was.

I know, from Greg Shaw's book "The Doors On The Road" that the show was cancelled at last minute, apparently because of a delay in the completion of extensive renovations in the auditorium, which then opens the next night with a concert by The Seeds".

About the "Teen Time USA" show I know Love were advertised on the poster but I don't know if they played or not. Obviously there were many shows where bands were billed but finally don't played, but I don't know if this was Love's case. Johnny Echols is a good friend of mine and he helped me a lot with my Love's story, but when I spoke with him I don't ask him answers like "yes" or "no" about if Love played or not all the shows in my list, because too many years had passed to remember!!

About the Terrace Ballroom show the poster has a date but no day of the week, leading to some confusion. Sometimes this show is listed as 1970. The touring schedules of the three bands suggests that the year was 1968 and that year is also confirmed from Arthur Lee, Johnny Echols and the other former bandmembers of the band in the new John Einarson book about Love.

Interesting. I see that Einarson claims in his book that the show took place in '68, but I can't find any mention of it by anyone else.

This website claims that Blue Cheer cancelled, and was replaced by Blue Mountain Eagle, a group that adopted their name in August of 1969.

July 18th `70 -Salt Lake City, UT - Terrace Ballroom (w/ Love, Fever Tree, AC) - Handbills exist showing Alice playing with Fever Tree, however posters exist with Alice Cooper listed but with Blue Cheer playing instead. However to add to the confustion apparently Blue Cheer canceled as well to be replaced by 'Blue Mountain Eagle'. The truth is Alice Cooper did not appear, Love was supported by Fever Tree and Blue Mountain Eagle that night.

A comment from someone who apparently attended the show:

The line up was: Blue Mountain Eagle, Fever Tree, and Love. Blue Cheer did not play this concert. Barney is probably confusing them with Fever Tree, who I agree were irritating. I loved Blue Cheer and would have been overjoyed to see them in place of Fever Tree. It would have made a great concert even better.

I've double-checked my information and my sources and, yes, I think you're right, the exact year was 1970 and the bill was: Love, Fever Tree and Blue Mountain Eagle (filling in for Blue Cheer). Good job! About the Pasadena Civic show, maybe Johnny Echols remember the show there on December 23, 1966 and not "that show" on June 2, 1967....I don't know....maybe Johnny's right or maybe Greg Shaw's right.....

Cool. I'm pretty sure that Michael would confirm it as well. This is from someone who apparently attended the show:

I then got connected to Mike Stuart (Love drummer) whom I never really new but had worked with back in the day. I sent him one of the hand bills from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium (see attachment). It was one of his first concerts with Love. They were to debut the songs from the De Capo album. I remember they were musically tight and seamless. The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band also played. What a night!
