Robby's amps?

Hey Vince, whitch amps did Robby use before you made the doors amp sistem?

First Robby used Fender twin reverbs. These were OK for the clubs and small venues but did not cut it as they started to play in larger places.

They went to Ampeg for the spring and summer tours of 1967. These lasted until I took over.. I had to return them to Ampeg after we got back from the December tour in San Francisco and Denver.

Then the new Acoustics came into use and they lasted for all of 1968.

I started building the new system in October 1968. It was completed for the Miami performance 1969. This was used throughout the remainder of the Doors tours until 1972 when they stopped playing. I believe that the system was sold in 1973 but I have no idea who bought it.

For the movie, they made mock-ups of the amps. They also used the 6 acoustics I had. Also the mikes, stands and cables, mixer and such which I had. What equipment you see for the mikes and such in the movie are the real thing. They were used to record the sound track. The sound guys were surprised that makes that old and unsophiosticated had such good response.

So, there it is.

He never used VOX?

In the beginning Ray had a Vox organ - (Who didn't) but he did not like the sound and it was a long sight from being able to take the abuse of airports. He switched to the Gibson Kalamazoo when (I am not usre of this) the Vox broke down and Bill Siddons could not revive it. I believe they got it form Manny's Music in New York and went on with the tour. Ray liked the sound and Biull liked the durability.

Remember that Bill worked alone in the beginning. He traveled with the guys, got them to hotels, went to the hall and did the set up. went back to gather the flock and get them to the hall and take care of the set. Then he also had to work with the promotor for the final ticket count, collect the balance of the $$ owing, pack up the equipment, round up some wet pants chick and spend the rest of the night getting anything but sleep.

For a surfer boy with no technical skill, Bill did a herculean job and managed to get it all done. It was for his heroic performance in the early days that was the real factor in the decision to take him on as Manager. One could say that, young and immature though he was, he did a good job of it. (Not as manager, However)

In any case, we had the vox tucked away and I think that once or twice on recordings Ray wanted to use it. Paul Rothschild did not like the sound. so it never really got off the wall.

I have no idea what happened to it.
