Anybody ever do 'critical' analysis on Jim's poems and writings?
New to the site, it was pointed out to me by some friends. For me, as someone who lives and breathes code, and loves the process of creating dreams via writing and imagination, would like to share and hear some notes.
"Critical" in quotes, because I mean, simply trying to figure the guy out more, and what he was saying.
[edit]
Years ago popped by John Densmore site, they used to have sections for this, but was bad timing for me.

I've gotten pretty deep into his words and poetry. What is it you are actually looking to learn here? What's your interpretation on some poems and lyrics?

Not sure. Maybe nothing, maybe something.MojoInTheSky wrote:I've gotten pretty deep into his words and poetry. What is it you are actually looking to learn here?
Had some friends encourage me recently to dig deeper, so I am.
I am into what we call "code reading" and "code writing", and Jim is one of the best at that. So, for me, he is a well known authority. Extremely pure hearted.
Ah, that, you know, there is so much material. I will work out stuff here, in this subforum, since they were so kind to make it.MojoInTheSky wrote:What's your interpretation on some poems and lyrics?
A lot of his stuff is straight up apocalyptic, that was coded so well, people don't even seem to get it, on a conscious level, anyway.
Really, though, selecting such a name as you did, I am sure you see the various patterns and major messages.
One interesting piece I came across recently was a likely meaning to the verse in 'five to one', 'five to one, one in five'. But, I do not feel comfortable making a statement on that at this time.
I will state I believe he had used the fingers of his good hand assigned each finger a separate meaning. Something he likely did not share with his bandmates, nor even his wife/gf. (Nobody ever wants to overburden their spouse.)
Far fetched claim, but, will see.

There is a thread in the main part of the board that contains links to some academic writing on the Doors and Morrison's work. University theses etc. You may want to look into some of those for critical analysis of their work.
This sounds interesting, I'd love to hear more.five2one wrote:

That is actually, also, a difficult question to answer. But, I will try:anytimecowboy wrote:What do you mean by code writing?
It is never just 'code writing', but also 'code reading'. The two go hand in hand.
It is not, per se, so far from this definition:
Code: Select all
code
kōd/Submit
noun
noun: code; plural noun: codes
1.
a system of words, letters, figures, or other symbols substituted for other words, letters, etc., especially for the purposes of secrecy.
"the Americans cracked their diplomatic code"
synonyms: cipher, key; More
a system of signals, such as sounds, light flashes, or flags, used to send messages.
"Morse code"
a series of letters, numbers, or symbols assigned to something for the purposes of classification or identification.
"the genetic code"
2.
COMPUTING
program instructions.
"hundreds of lines of code"
3.
a systematic collection of laws or regulations.
"the criminal code"
synonyms: law(s), rules, regulations; More
a set of conventions governing behavior or activity in a particular sphere.
"a dress code"
synonyms: morality, convention, etiquette, protocol, value system
"a strict social code"
a set of rules and standards adhered to by a society, class, or individual.
"a stern code of honor"
verb
verb: code; 3rd person present: codes; past tense: coded; past participle: coded; gerund or present participle: coding
1.
convert (the words of a message) into a particular code in order to convey a secret meaning.
"only Mitch knew how to read the message—even the name was coded"
express the meaning of (a statement or communication) in an indirect or euphemistic way.
"a national campaign against “playing by ear,” a coded phrase that meant jazz"
assign a code to (something) for purposes of classification, analysis, or identification.
"she coded the samples and sent them down for dissection"
2.
write code for (a computer program).
"most developers code C + + like C"
3.
BIOCHEMISTRY
specify the genetic sequence for (an amino acid or protein).
"genes that code for human growth hormone"
be the genetic determiner of (a characteristic).
"one pair of homologous chromosomes that codes for eye color"
Origin
Middle English: via Old French from Latin codex, codic- (see codex). The term originally denoted a systematic collection of statutes made by one of the later Roman emperors, particularly that of Justinian; compare with sense 3 of the noun (mid 18th century), the earliest modern sense. It is practically a zen koan. And, the main folks I live and work with, are Japanese.
In short, for instance, a poet like Byron, Rimbaud, Jim Morrison... they read the code of what? Of many things. But, of existence. Of the core matrix of the universe. Of the Universe. Of the deep foundations of the Universe and earth.
The Universe and the earliest children and the parents, those before the Universe, rely on this code methodology for communicating and observing.
DNA is code. Finding DNA was code reading of a wide variety of types.
The mathematics behind quantum and astro physics is code. Reading that code was all which was required to come to the best conclusions they had and have.
And, so on...

Thanks, I will check out those resources. Picked up some new books on Google Books, as well. Good to hear that there has been some more serious work and research performed on his stuff. He was so far ahead of his time, he was very far from getting the respect he deserved.Steeps wrote:There is a thread in the main part of the board that contains links to some academic writing on the Doors and Morrison's work. I was disturbed that all I could find on instant video sites (hulu, netflix, amazon instant) was either nothing or crap.

Re: Anybody ever do 'critical' analysis on Jim's poems and writings?
From what I can tell he experienced LSD in a very unique way, and he was able to turn a lot of his feelings, ideas, thoughts, and actual visions into his poems. They are coded so to speak, as to the average person you probably wouldn't be able to pick up on just how deep he was going. Psychedelics have a lot of potential to dip into the "universal mind" if you will. To experience what Jim did, you have to know that he really didn't care if he died, he was able to let go, and essentially become one with the universe.
He had such a big control over crowds and the music because he was essentially hearing it from beyond. I think I read something where he said "I just saw the concert in my head, and I took notes" He was completely open and vulnerable to the energy of the universe and world, and he became a shaman in the sense of being able to articulate and put his visions into words and music.
Take this poem for example:
Power
"I can make the earth stop in
its tracks. I made the
blue cars go away.
I can make myself invisible or small.
I can become gigantic & reach the
farthest things. I can change
the course of nature.
I can place myself anywhere in
space or time.
I can summon the dead.
I can perceive events on other worlds,
in my deepest inner mind,
& in the minds of others.
I can
I am"
I firmly believe that he was able to and witnessed these things. I even had the crazy notion he was a bit of a prophet with lines during WTMO like "Everything you do will be reported, everything you do will be reported, at night your dreams will be recorded"
I may just be too into the lore. But I have had a good deal of trips of my own, The Doors put me into some pretty unique places. Jim Morrison put me into some weird places. But there is definitely more to the band then the common fans give them credit for.

Basically, I had a vision, which showed it to me. I always liked the song, and had probably heard all of the variant possibilities of what it meant, but nothing seemed to stick. This was not, however, a problem I was working on, nor anything like that.
I will just say it regarded his present life and his past lives.
Which leaves me with that knowledge, but frankly, I do not feel comfortable telling anyone, as it is too unbelievable.
At the time, I did believe Jim was someone reincarnated, but was taken back that he would have seen himself as multiple people from the past reincarnated.
These are major figures. They dwarf common suspects like Rimbaud or Byron.
The most major figure, I had no idea that person had any past lives (on planet earth), at all. I pretty well knew that about Jim, though. I think everyone does.
Unconsciously, anyway.
All I can ask is please suspend your disbelief and think on it for awhile.
When I got back to my computer, admittedly, I was wondering how it was Jim even ever believed in reincarnation. But, quickly was reminded that the line "this is the strangest life I have ever lived" was not just one I sometimes told my own self from the Stone movie, but was an actual lyric in one of his songs.
Jim was intensely good at disguise, amazingly so.

What pains me is there is more to the band then what the band give themselves or Jim credit for.
In this, I have finally understood why my friend took the name Lazarus, or why he cried that one time before we parted ways for awhile.
It is the sort of painful sadness that Jesus felt when he went to resurrect Lazarus.

But sometimes, something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it and the soul can't rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right.
Anyway, thank you for the comments.

Re: Anybody ever do 'critical' analysis on Jim's poems and writings?
On the subject of the band and Jim not giving themselves enough credit. I think Jim was very passionate about what they were actually doing, and was fully aware of it. I'm sure the rest of the band was too. However, after he realized that no one was really listening anymore, he stopped caring. Honestly, can you imagine how crazy the band would sound to the public if they came out and said. "Hey we were doing some mystical stuff back then man, like full blown religious experiences in some cases"
Other bands like Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd also had this impact, but it's not talked about. It's almost like a secret of the musicians, and those who dig enough to find it.
They will likely never get the respect they deserve, and unfortunately the way this music effects us, will slowly get lost to history. There is some weird shit dug deep into these tunes, I fully believe that.

Re: Anybody ever do 'critical' analysis on Jim's poems and writings?
Jim, I had no doubt in his passion about what he was doing. I do see a number of lyrics that I see as him speaking of his own death, however.MojoInTheSky wrote:On the subject of the band and Jim not giving themselves enough credit. The bandmates, I thought, unconsciously knew, but were and have been locked in a dream that protected them from a lot of it.
Though, only read some from Robby, I did read John's book. Reading Ray's now. Ray seems the stone of them. Just got his novel about, effectively, Jim having faked his own death. He calls him J. In the novel.
Still, Ray was very locked in a different path.
But, have seen plenty of folks who appear to be one way, and really are another way. (And even another and another and another, lol.)
My working belief was they all had a past life together, but were protected from that knowledge, as it really would be enough to tear people up.
I do not think Jim failed at what he was trying to do. I do not think, at that level, it is possible to fail.
I think Jim was not so well recognized because he refused to recognize his own self, usually. Humility and staying in character to continue rapport.
I also think he realized that what has to be done, needs more then this. The music platform was good for getting out a message.
Even for calling for the war.
