The Youngbloods were definitely part of the soundtrack of our lives in the 60's!

Here's Darkness Darkness...covered by so many since, including Robert Plant and Eric Burden.....here's The Youngbloods' original with Jesse Colin Young's lead guitar break!! And that soulful fiddle is sweet.

Click "more" for the dark & beautiful lyrics.....some of my favorite!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-CYWbfFoXY

"Darkness, darkness, be my blanket,
Cover me with the endless night,
Take away the pain of knowing,
Fill the emptiness of right now..."

......Lyrics that our Jim would be proud of.

Another GREAT Detroit rocking psych band from the 60's......they were also at the top in the Motor City when MC5 & the Stooges were on top!

SRC "Black Sheep" anyone else know this great band? Hey, Detroit guy....know this one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb2LHBnr9HM

.......of course........
...... maybe some of you know them (The SRC is short for The Scott Richardson Case) via the 1996 "Revelation Blues" by Scott Richardson featuring Ray Manzarek. You can find it at Ray's official site.

 Discover and enjoy.

I know some of you enjoy my little trips back to the psychedelic 60's. Back to places in my memory when I was in Haight and SF and some flower child, with flowers in her hair--really, would walk up to as you crossed the street and ask if you wanted to score some acid.....and the transaction happened right there in the crosswalk....without fear! Holy crap what was i thinking!

But it WAS an innocent time...we didn't think about narcs...yet......and we hadn't heard the lyrics, "Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming....four dead in Ohio"

Well, here are three psychedelic drenched tracks from one of the trippiest psych bands from the 60's....The Plastic Cloud...I know Ed will attest to the greatness of this obscure Canadian band. (I've posted one a while back, but the first two are new.....the third a 9 minute Fuzz atomic blast (literally at the end)

Enjoy the trip.....

I hope you enjoy the music, misty...and all.

One more for your weekend.......Nick Drake IS a soundtrack for my life. Not because he suffered from depression all his life until his death in '74, but because, in spite of this, his music found hope, somewhere in the darkness.

His last song on his final album...... before he died of an overdose from his medications......he still finds hope in all he sees.

A day once dawned and it was beautiful
A day once dawned from the ground
Then the night she fell
And the air was beautiful
The night she fell all around

So look see the days
The endless coloured ways
And go play the games that you learnt
From the morning

And now we rise
And we are everywhere
(his epitaph, chosen by his family)
And now we rise from the ground
And she flies
And she is everywhere
See she flies all around

So look see the sights
The endless summer nights
And go play the game that you learnt
From the morning

A song for your weekend.......

Yes, I remember sharing this when you spoke of your Mother, misty.

It is a beautiful thought. Appropriate for each day we rise and when we are finally in the ground.......we are everywhere in everything we see....and so are the ones we miss that are gone.

I've been thinking of putting that one on my gravestone......hopefully a long way off.

Fred Neil ......if you don't know him, you know I'm gonna make sure.
He wrote "Everybody's Taliking" and "The Dolphins" and "The Other Side Of This Life", "A little Bit Of Rain" and on and on......

He was a the Greenwich Village singer/songwriter everyone wanted to play on stage with...Dylan accompanied Fred before Dylan was known, Neil was the man. A couple albums and too much heroiine and he left NY for his Florida home and music...and he never looked back devoting his life to saving Dolphins until his death.

It was his line,"I'll never get outta these blues alive...." A great folk blues baritone voice like no other.

I've Got a Secret (Didn't we shake sugaree)

That's The Bag I'm In..."they'll probably drop the atom bomb the day my ship comes in".....love that line.

Everybody's Talkin'...I love Harry, but this version is the best!

 I didn't realize that was a Fred Neil song. I had always thought the garage band The Fabs had done the original version. They really reworked it.

Hey, Bally, get the original. You like the 60's classics.

Fred Neil is a must! "Bleeker & McDougal" is sooo good...on Electra & one of my favorite covers by Electra. I once corresponded with Jac Holzman and told him so. He said his favorite cover is "Morrison Hotel" Cool.

For all you that love the best of the PSYCH music of the 60's......The Pretty Things

SF SORROW

Released a full year before Tommy, this classic, is considered to be the first true concept rock/opera LP. Sooo FAR superior to Tommy....well you won't believe it! Pete Townsend heard it at a party long before Tommy was a gleam in his eye, though he has denied it until recently. The confusion on who was first comes from the fact that it was not released in the US until AFTER Tommy.

And get THIS......SF Sorrow was recorded at Abbey Road Studios at the same time the Beatles were recording "Sgt. Peppers" and Pink Floyd were recording "Piper at The Gates Of Dawn". And the Pretties LP is considered in the same league as these other two masterpieces. Story from band members is that they passed back and forth between sessions, listening to each other record; influences are unmistakable. ....what a trip!!

Here are 8 tracks....some of the finest songwriting, singing, musicianship from the 60's you'll ever hear....REALLY! You know you can trust me.

Listen and enjoy! Better play this, Tomi, when you're set up!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07DA1iAt1UM
(This has some editing to fit all these tracks in 9 minutes.....but it's a GREAT intro...full tracks are over on the side bar....I especially love Baron Saturday--it's hard rocking psych!)

=)(Had you heard them before, Ed?)

Judy Henske & Jerry Yester Farewell Adelbaran
A 1969 cult classic...folk psych blues like you've NEVER heard...legendary.
Check it out this weekend....pretty soulful and trippy. What do you think of her voice?

One band that really took me to the psychedelic edge and over...

Country Joe & The Fish Electric Music For the Mind And Body, Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die

They really were/are a TRIP with some very psychedelic and beautiful music and some pretty funny/cynical/tragic commentary of the day...."be the first on the block to have your boy come home in a box..." Being just young freaks, we cut apart and played the Fish Game, tripping to "Thought Dream"!

Not to mention Country Joe's song (and love) for sweet Janis. If you haven't listened, please do, or listen again. Eni and lovemygirl got me putting this on the TT! Thanks!

Glad you took the time to listen. Country Joe somehow is able to combine that "sweetness" here with cynicism, humor, tripped out totally psychedelic, great instrumental layers in his music. Some extended mellow, long, trip music on those LPs too.

Cheers, Eni

The 60's were the era of three piece super groups and the trio ensemble format offered, for some, total versatility as a band. Lead, bass, drums....doesn't get better. What's your favorite trio? Cream, James Gang, jimi Hendrix Experience.......or Love Sculpture Dave Edmunds' blues rock vehicle to showcase his considerable talent on guitar.

"Forms and Feelings" (a product of the 60's, but released in 1970). Their venture into psychedelia was THE TRIPPIEST and Dave Edmunds' lead is unexcelled! Their first LP "Blues Helping" is pretty damn good too.

TIME TO LISTEN.......

For those of you that already love Tim Buckley or who NOW love him because of the videos above.....
......please check out MY FLEETING HOUSE.

The first and only DVD of 14 separate live performances of Tim (including Morning Glory from above) ranging from '66 on the Monkeys to just before his death in the early 70's....along with intros to each song by guitarist Lee Underwood and others. There is no bio or story included, but rather a musical journey of the 9 years Buckley spent as a wonderful, but rather obscure artist.

If you grieve about the paucity of live footage of the DOORS...there are NO full concert tapes of Tim Buckley....and these 14 songs are IT!!! No others out there.

....... treasure and enjoy.

It can be had for $12 or so on Amazon etc. Not a bad deal for a magical trip.
Here is a nice review.....
