My mate had a live version of American Woman on vinyl that went for about 20 mins, there was a large instrumental for about 10 mins then the typical American Woman cut in, it blew my mind and made me put on flared jeans and a wing collar.

That's Paul alright....didn't know he recorded it. A nice pass to Badfinger--their pet band for Apple. What a great group they were!!

Yep - they're the first band I think I ever saw live at a festival in St. Paul as a kid. Of course Pete Ham was long dead by them and probably only one or two guys was left from the original lineup.
Anyway, Paul recorded the demo in under an hour, playing all of the parts himself, before the band recorded Sun King and Mean Mr. Mustard later in the day. A week later he had Badfinger record the song and told them to just copy his demo exactly, which they basically did but sped up slightly.

I first heard it back in the early 80's on a cleverly put together bootleg LP entitled "File Under: Beatles". The cover is a file folder which, in addition to the LP, contains a photo of The Beatles and a strip of film. In addition to the unique packaging, it was all previously unheard material at the time.

I just downloaded a PDF of Mark Lewisohn's Studio Recordings book.. suffice it to say I'm going to have very little free time this week

He did an amazing job with that book. I saw him at Beatlefest shortly after it was released, and he signed my copy. If only the Doors archives were as well preserved...
