Good work.

Nice work! You got patience to notice all the details from a single frame.
I wonder if Paul's team left a well labelled stuff from their '68 filming so that the band nowadays knows exactly what they have in the vaults.
And Chris, this is not a joke and I hope you don't think I'm being too entusiastic, but I do think The Doors should have people like you to finally get all their stuff organized and correctly labelled.
Thanks.

They haven't got a clue.

According to what Tom DiCillo has been saying, he received all The Doors footage on DVDs with no labels or information. Even bits of HWY were included randomly and he had to ask where the footage came from. It sounds like whoever did the digital transfers didn't take any care in doing it and/or none of the reels were properly labelled. At least providing a month/year for the footage and a rough timeline would've been very helpful for a director telling The Doors' story.

Exactly, he said they were just labeled with reel numbers, they don't have them cataloged properly.

Obviously Dave's not the right man for the job. Politics.

Unbelievable.
This is a band that sells millions...
I guess they can use RIM photo archive and read some of the posts in this forum to make the situation a little better.
I would laugh about if this was not such a sad real sad situation.
We care about this band that's why it is painful to see how some things happen.
Unbelievable.

This is probably why footage of The Doors Are Open was used in WYS that ran slow as opposed to the speed-corrected source was used in The Doors Classic Albums DVD.

I have to agree with you. It's sad. And not necessary.

Just found this video, has some nice fotos in there...

And here the Winter's show from 1967, haven't seen it in years, seems like good quality to me, although it's not properly synched.

If the San Bernardino tape was from the Kaiser Dome, wouldn't reviews have mentioned the glitch with the PA system?

If the San Bernardino AUD previously thought to be from Swing Auditorium 12/16/67 is indeed the 7/4/67 Kaiser Dome gig instead (which I strongly believe it is!), I think we can probably safely assume that it was the one of the last gigs (if not the last) that they performed Alabama Song in its entirety since they did the AS/BDM medley five days later in Santa Clara.

I've never seen a contemporary review, only distant and general recollections.
For all we know they could have come back.
I just see it as being limited to a certain time frame ("Light My Fire is still a top five record...") and the fact that it's another gig that was unknown in the city that the gig was supposed to be which just happens to fit in that time frame seems to seal it.

I agree it could be a mislabel, but why would it necessarily be the Kaiser Dome? Is the assumption that only the venue label is incorrect? Also, Shaw mentions in his book that people who attended the show remember The Doors didn't come back after Jim said they would. Not sure what his source was for that information. If a review could be found mentioning the PA problems -- I'd be surprised if someone wrote a review of the show and didn't mention it -- then we could accurately label the show. Even a recollection many years later would likely mention it because it's an unusual thing to happen. Finding the original taper would also settle things. But I'm not sure we can say that the city is right but the venue is wrong or vice versa without some other evidence. The announcer saying "still a top five record" could refer to LMF having slipped from the #1 spot which happened in late July. There's just little to suggest Kaiser Dome over any other show from earlier in the year other than the city which could also be wrong. Shaw suggests that there's been dispute over the Continental Ballroom date as well.

Shaw is too vague to be particularly strong evidence, imo. Plus, he might have talked to people who were actually at the Kaiser Dome (assuming he talked to anybody).
I mean, he didn't know about the show, and that person/those people might not have had specific memories about the venue. Both places were on the Orange Show grounds in San Bernardino, literally a few hundred feet apart, so it wouldn't be too hard to mix them up.
The other thing is, here are three surveys from the station that promoted the Kaiser Dome show (note the position on the day before the show, July 3):
Perfect time frame and a venue right next to the misidentified venue, seems strong enough to me to identify it with a relative degree of certainty.

That's what I call research

Still an inference... But strong indications.

Very interesting. I didn't know the venues were so close together. I think it's a strong possibility and a great lead. Tracking down audience members/the taper or a review would clinch it for me. But I shall mull this new information over with some cervezas and reconsider this tape's place in the universe....

I'm going to see what I can do about asking those two DJs and report back if I hear anything.
Incidentally, the Doors were sued by some girl who got burned by one of the stage lights at this show. I think darkstar on JD's site posted some documents about it.

Hmm, that's news to me. Yeah it's too bad that a few of the AUD's recorders are known.

Here's the response we got from one of the DJs:
Hi Bryson,
Yep that is me in the striped shirt. My Doors "history" goes back a little
further than that. I was Music Director of KFIF radio in Tucson ('66 and
part of '67, until I moved to K/MEN), and I was one of the first MD's
(especially for an AM station) to play Light My Fire, even played the long
version (to piss of our competition), though the 45 made it to number one on
our chart pretty quickly.
I only have a couple of memories of the 1967 concert. Jim Morrison (whom I
want to believe is still alive), made an effort (I'm sure with the Electra
promo guy's help) to walk up to each of the K/MEN jock, and introduce
himself before the concert. In my case he walked up to me (alone), extended
his hand, and said "Hi T. Michael my name is Jim Morrison, and I just want
to thank you for playing our music, I heard you on the radio and really
enjoyed listening." Quite an ego fulfillment moment.
Also during the concert (in the finale) Jim was dancing around on stage
during an instrumental interlude, swinging the mic (no wireless then) around
the top of his head like a lasso, when a girl jumped up on stage and got hit
in the head. (some of this is fuzzy) The concert came to a quick end, the
girl was taken to the hospital and I believe Jim either rode with her in the
ambulance, or shortly thereafter went to the hospital. Not sure but I
believe the girl lost a tooth or two, but otherwise was fine.
That's about it, except to say that to this day I am a huge Doors (and
Morrison) fan.
Hope those remembrances are of some use.
T. Michael.
