Ray's mysterious setup Vancouver 1968

We're lucky to have former Doors road manager Vince Treanor here to answer fan questions and share some of his memories. Ask Vince about anything related to the equipment The Doors used, stage set-ups, specific concerts, the band after Jim's death, and working on the Oliver Stone movie.

Ray's mysterious setup Vancouver 1968

Post by jim4371 »

Hey Vince,
I just saw this photo for the first time, of Ray from Vancouver, July 13, 1968.
It's really weird, there's a Vox Continental, and on top of that, it looks like another organ (maybe an RMI?), and atop that something else (not the Piano Bass, something else).
Any ideas?

Not photo to see or check. Once again I mention that we did not carry the Vox, which was too fragile for the road beatings that the equipment took, We had no other instrument at that time but were negotiating with Rocky Mount Inststruments for an RMI piano/organ. Personally I really liked the sound and tonal selections. Ray, on the onther hand, hated it with a passion.

RMI pianos were simply too heavy and too fragile for road transport. It was bad enough keeping the Piano bass in repair and tune with just 24 keys. Imagine 88 keys and the enormous weight of the tone bars.

CORRECTION

Fender Rhodes pianos were too heavy and they certainly did not give the sustained sound of the Gobson organ that Ray likes. Remember that Ray tended to create a "Blues" style in his playing and pianos did not support that style.
