Favorite female singer songwriters.....

Post by jamestkirk »

So many, so little time.....

I will start with one that I don't remember seeing discussed here....

MELISSA ETHERIDGE....DOES ANYONE WRING MORE EMOTION out of a song?!! Here is a heart rending video from 94....maybe a little over done, but the music is rocking full tilt as usual!

so....Your favorites with some of their music to share...?

Of course Janis J :) Always Janis  Grace Slick was cool and I love her voice. And in the field of GREAT modern female singers and songwriters I'd have to say Fiona Apple, adore her :D

Carole King. She co-wrote "Don't Bring Me Down", which is one of my favorite Animals songs, as well as three of the Monkees greatest in "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "The Porpoise Song" and "As We Go Along". IMO, the "Porpoise Song"/"As We Go Along" 45 is one of the all-time best. She was also covered by The Beatles and The Byrds, and wrote several other classic hits. Of course, there's also her classic album "Tapestry".

The Animals performing "Don't Bring Me Down" on the Ed Sullivan Show:

Any fans of Kristin Hersh i wonder?
Pretty much in a league of her own, whether it be her work with Throwing Muses, her own solo work or the heavy Thrash sound of Fifty foot wave.
Prefer the muses and early solo releases myself as they were quite sparse in production but sung with great emotion,.
Very much an unsung hero/heroine in my book

Never forget Minnie Riperton.

I'm not sure if she wrote her music but she sure could sing it. RIP

Not sure if these ladies qualify as singer/songwriters as such but they are great musicians and performers so I thought I would include them.

Gin Wigmore - unusual voice and great music...

I've known these girls since they started playing together in 1984-85. Not the best video, and its long after their heyday, but still pretty good.

Nina Simone! It gives me chills!

I feel there's a lot I still don't know about this great artist.
She had such expressivity in her voice.

All I could think of listening to that song was the poor people of Japan
it's the space between the notes that make the music

Gayle McCormick, lead singer for Smith. Their cover of Baby, It's You is the best version of that song.

My favorite from Sandy.....

Solo Piano version--demo

"NO END"
Some others by Sandy I particularly love...

"The End Of The Day"
"Sweet Rosemary"
"RIsing For The Moon"

"No End" I find to be particularly bittersweet and gets me thoughtful and quiet....a real favorite! If you have the acoustic demo with just Denny on the piano ---that is my favorite!

Just sublime! Brilliant!
