The Doors Forum

After the publication of Forever Changes by John Einarson, the subsequent rave reviews and forum discussions, here and at Torben's, the interest in Love has been renewed and invigorated like never before. With so many new facts and stories, so many myths destroyed, the debate and interest for Love and Arthur will likely go on for years.

I only wish such a detailed, intelligent, interesting bio could be written by Einarson about the DOORS. There are already too many bad books about them and the good ones are just not as complete or objective. The new documentary does nothing to shed new light on any questions we may have.

Maybe, for now, the myth and legend of the DOORS is just too much of a money maker for anyone to really get down and reveal all we would like to know.

But still...a book by Einarson (like the one about the DOORS that Ed calls our Love 'bible') and a documentary like Love Story would be a dream come true. Unfortunately we don't have Jim's voice to tell his story, as we do in Einarson's book. Even so, Einarson's bio about the late Gene Clark was just as compelling with no memoirs to print as with Arthur Lee's, so even without Jim. it CAN be done. What we lack, in my opinion, is the definitive DOORS biography, written by such a respected biographer as John Einarson.

It would indeed be nice to have some new stories, but I wouldn't hold your breath for an Einarson bio on The Doors. First of all, there have probably been more books written about The Doors than all of the subjects of Einarson's books combined. That includes the highly regarded "Break On Through: The Life and Death of Jim Morrison". Robby will be joining Ray and John in releasing his own book about The Doors, while John has written another one as well. Also, Einarson apparently doesn't have a very high opinion of The Doors' music, describing it as "dated" and "pretentious".

My biggest complaint against Einarson's book was the use of those barbs in describing the Doors music, as well as referring to them as "acolytes". Undeserved and incorrect IMO. I guess he didn't feel the love for them.

Those weren't Einarson's words--don't shoot the messenger...



...and when hearing the Doors in a smaller club, compared to LoVE, they may HAVE sounded a bit more like a "lounge act" with their spare sound--as compared to when the DOORS' were using huge amps in arena settings....even early Love's sound blew everyone out of the room (Bido Lito's), with no care for the listeners' eardrums or the small spaces of those Strip clubs! Square footage be damned, LOVE blew the crowd out of the room!
