I can't believe my eyes. Poor people.
Haiti, New Zealand, Japan.
Japan is supposedly the most well prepared in the world and we have a nuclear alarm right now.
Nature again telling us how small and fragile we are.
May this people and this country have some rest to take care of the affected people and to rebuild the structures.

Terrible tragedy....

My nephew and his wife are in Tokyo which got shaken quite a bit but no real damage. All the trains and public transit are shut down though, so they walked to work.

The news out of Japan just keeps getting worse as the hours pass...

What has happened/is happening in Japan is far worse than what happened here. My thoughts are with the Japanese!

Yes.
In terms of magnitude it's one of the strongest ones ever.
In terms of deaths we still don't know. Early estimates are one thousand. It's frightening. I also fear for the nuclear alert.

I'm glad that both in Chile and New Zealand the tsunami has caused no serious damage.

I just saw the morning news and I'm very worried about the nuclear situation.

And F., I know that Chile is also a place with a high risk with several occurrences. Fortunately, it's not on the list which means that at least so far no occurrence caused at least 50.000 deaths. Terrible list.

I am concerned about the nuclear situation too.

They say it's about to happen.
I extracted some lines from the CNN news.
There's still that feeling that everything will be solved and the tragedy will not even bigger. Our thoughts and our prayers (and for those who believe it) are with Japan.

Blast, cooling system breakdown spread fears of nuclear radiation

Tokyo (CNN) -- A blast at a nuclear reactor and a series of problems at a neighboring one led to a brief spike in radiation levels outside Japan's troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant Monday, triggering even greater fears that dangerous radiation could add to the country's devastation.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said he was not ruling out the possibility of a meltdown at all three troubled reactors at the plant.

The blast -- caused by a buildup of hydrogen -- also damaged the cooling system at reactor No. 2, starting a new round of problems for officials trying to contain the damage from Friday's earthquake and tsunami.

About 200,000 people had evacuated the area following a government order over the weekend. And after Monday's blast, authorities ordered at least 500 residents remaining within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the plant to stay inside, Edano said.

Japanese officials have said they are operating under the presumption that there may already be a partial meltdown at reactors No. 1 and No. 3. Authorities have not been able to confirm a meltdown because it is too hot inside the affected reactors to check.

The United States has sent a team of experts to assist Japan at the nuclear site, including two cooling experts. U.S. officials are also "assembling a team of experts that would be dispatched in the near future," Greg Jaczko, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said Monday.


Most experts aren't expecting a reprise of the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown, which killed 32 plant workers and firefighters in the former Soviet Union and at least 4,000 others from cancers tied to radioactive material released by the plant. The Japanese plants are designed differently, including a series of protections aimed at preventing leakage in the event of a disaster.

Analysts said Japan's crisis is unique.

"This is unprecedented," said Stephanie Cooke, the author of "In Mortal Hands: A Cautionary History of the Nuclear Age." "You've never had a situation with multiple reactors at risk."

Japan's 54 nuclear reactors provide about 30% of the country's electricity, according to the World Nuclear Association.

I remember 2-2.5 years ago there was this discussion about choosing to go for nuclear energy in Portugal. To become energy independent, they said. Sure, if you're dead you are not dependent anymore.

There is one in California built right on an active fault line. THe brainy ones must not have been consulted on that one! After all, Japan is on the fault line of three very active plates that are always moving!

I am joking about a very tragic situation but it is a jaded world view and sometimes a bit of satirical wit helps to relieve the pain...only for a bit.

But yeah, we won't be dependent on imported energy if we don't exist any longer....the planet will recover after we destroy ourselves-we won't.

You just keep that sweet butt safe you. Being prepared is a must living in an area with earthquake faults. The San Andreas is the most active one I believe?

Hummm, dangerous place. A huge potential of destruction. The thing is that we always think it will happen in 100 years from now. And it usually does. I hope so both in Portugal, in the US, wherever you are.
What makes people to keep on livin on these places? I suppose there's some other safer places here in Portugal to live with less risks but it wouldn't be the same thing. At least for now I'm not considering in moving. And if this happen I suppose it will not be because of earthquake risks.

Two crisis, one after another.
7 thousand deaths, 11 thousand missing. Millions affected by the devastation. The terrible thing is that the future is also threatened. It's not just a question of rebuilding. If they will not solve quickly the nuclear crisis I guess some parts of the country would have to be abandoned for decades.

I just read they stabilized 3 reactors so that is at least a bit of good news.
But when and how and if people will actually be able to go back and start new again there in the area for the coming times. I doubt it.
There problaby leaked much more then is known or reported now.

No serious injuries at all from the USA quakes..

well, it was 7 degree, but no damage stuff or people, everyone is fine, we have lucky, the epicenter was 146 km down in Pucallpa

Wow...you know quakes seemed to hit all over in the last few days....Virginia, Colorado, wasn't there one in Mexico too? And one near you Spermy?

well, i'm in Lima and we felt 2 - 3 degrees, pucallpa is in the jungle of peru, almost near to bolivia and brasil, maybe brazilian fellas also felt it, but no damage to anybody
