I'm not going to go into a political diatribe. I will only say I'm happy justice has finally been done, but I do fear retaliations in the coming weeks. I'm going into Manhattan tonight for a chess tournament and I can only begin to imagine how much security will be beefed up.
With regard to whether or not the White House should release photos of the corpse I'm divided. Yes, it's an extremely sensitive issue and the reaction of extremists must be feared but, on the other hand, I think people want undeniable proof. I'm curious to see how the White House handles this. My guess is they won't release pics but will just say the DNA testing confirmed it was him.

What about the supposed burial at an undisclosed location at sea part? Was that a load of bs or did they really do that? If so, it's gotta be the dumbest fucking thing I've heard a government do in a looong while (well, perhaps not that long, but you get the general idea here...

).
In this case I actually think photos/hard evidence of some kind should be the only way to go....being "respectful" to this man isn't all that high on my list, and besides...this is not yet another public cry for death/general human bloodlust, it's more about putting this aspect of the whole thing to rest after all these years, and also out of respect for the lives lost simply for the sake of the pursuit of this one man. Would be nice, don't you think?

According to the Islam, people should be burried within 24 hours. The reason why they burried him at sea is unclear to me.Maybe to make a burial place not some pelgrimage.

Yeah, I know it was due to the 24 hrs Islam thing and preventing people from having a grave to go to, thus making it into a sort of shrine and so on...still doesn't change the fact that it was a pretty f'in stupid idea.
I wonder how many conspiracy theories will grow out of that stupid ass decision...

I am afraid that now that the sob died the Islam will make him a national hero and I am afraid that he will do more harm dead than when he was alive .
Even here in Greece the security measures are very tight and outside the American embassy have told people not even to cross the road .
May he rot in hell

Right...I did not celebrate when I heard the news.
First thing I thought was, holy crap, how will they retaliate.

I went out before to have lunch and get the papers. Some of the headlines here in New York are striking. Some examples:
New York Post - Got Him ! Vengeance At Last ! U.S. Nails The Bastard.
New York Daily News - Rot In Hell !
The Philadelphia Daily News, which a friend sent me, says:
We Got The Bastard !
A point I found interesting:
In today's New York Times, Bin Laden is not referred to as "Mr." In the past, that title was used by the paper for all male public figures, criminals or otherwise. In this case the paper made an exception, deeming him unworthy of such a title.

Not sad news but will I not celebrate death.
However, he ended up as it should be.
I'm thinking in the thousands of innocents including muslims that were killed by his inspiration and orders.
Justice was made.
I hope there will be no retaliations but I will not be surprised if it will occurr. I'm not sure that even with the precautions taken by the US authorities this killer will not turn a martyr.

Conspiracy theories thrive on ignoring evidence.. the more of it there is, the more fun they have with it. Case in point: the moon landings. You can show them the freakin' laser beam we've been bouncing off of Apollo equipment for 40 years.. and they'll just ignore it.
Soon enough we'll have photos and, likely, video, at the very least of the funeral. This reminds me of the time the US raised the Soviet sub K-129 and buried some of her crew back at sea. We videotaped the funeral to show the Soviets, just to show that we observed tradition, etc.

Yeah, they'll probably come forward with photos and/or video (there's also DNA samples)... I'm fully aware of this possibility of course. It's already been reported that they do have photos of Osama with a shot up face---said to be unrecognizable.
I still don't see why they were in such a rush to bury the last decade's most infamous and hated man, next to his one time opponent George W Bush of course, at sea...claiming they did it to honor his religion? What a crock of shit....
You can argue that this was done to appease the oh so fragile dark age sensibilities of Islamic extremists in an attempt to avoid retaliations for the killing of Osama, still doesn't make it right...too many peple have died on both sides to simply have the man dumped in the ocean overnight, vanishing without a trace.
Not saying I would want his dead body hung up in a city square for display or anything, not my kind of style
Just seems to me that this quick funeral/burial thing is showing far too much respect for the villain and not nearly enough for the victims and the general population that has lived in varying degrees of fear ever since this whole terror thing broke out in full bloom back in the early 2000s.
Seems careless and rushed imo.
What they will present the public with in terms of evidence for somewhat of a full closure of this past "decade of Bin Laden" will probably reveal itself soon enough.
I'll be staying tuned..

They gave bin Laden the respect that he didn't give to his victims.
True justice would have been to take him alive. I'm still not sure what the details are. First, I heard that they wanted to take him alive if they could, but bin Laden had a gun and they were forced to kill him. Later, I heard that he didn't have a gun and that they had no intention of taking him alive. If that's the case, it's an assassination which runs contrary to U.S. policy, ironic considering that the U.S. Government is willing to bomb civilian populated areas. It would have been true justice for bin Laden to see the inside of a civilian courtroom and to answer for his crimes. If they did assassinate him, it may have been to avoid the controversy that would have accompanied a trial. Look at the controversy surrounding the prospect of trying Khalid Sheik Mohammed. They may have just wanted to put an end to it.

Justice was served. A bullet to the head. It was a kill mission from the beginning. I wish I could have seen the look on his face when the SEALS busted through the door and put that laser sight on his head. A trial would have been a spectacle. A long drawn out process that would have taken years.
According to people that have seen the photo of the body it was recognizable, but part of his skull above the left eye was blown off.
As for burying him so quickly. I think it was not so much as having respect for HIM, but for the Islamic religion. Could you imagine the uproar if he was not buried within 24 hours? I don't think burying at sea was stupid. It was reported that no Country wanted his body. There was talk about possibly giving him to his native country of Saudi Arabia. No doubt there would have been wackjobs flocking to his grave. Now he's fish bait.

Sure, but as a consequence it was like giving Bin Laden respect that he never earned or should have been shown....I'm not one for mixing politics and justice with dark age religion, taking it up the ass out of fear for retaliation from religious freaks should have been left in the past long ago...the more we bend over, the more they will want to fuck us...simple logic
Experts on/teachers of Islamic religion are already claiming that the burial at sea was disrespectful and against the teachings of Islam so....I still say that this rushed burial was a stupid move, wether or not it appeased the minds of Islamic nutjobs is of no value whatsoever to me.
Society worldwide has changed enough over the last decade because of these pricks and I'm not one for continuing and in essence escalating this constant fear of religious retaliation if we do not bend over backwards to please them...

....well, not openly
....I am an American, but I am not naive about such goings on.
Such covert operations have been going on long before Bin Laden... or Judas or Brutus or.....whether carried out by government or individuals. He may not have deserved justice in such a "romantic" or dramatic way....but he got it.
Sadly we may soon see this....."and now for the MOVIE".

Right. You're not going to please everyone. I'm sure some of the same people that think it was disrespectful also think it is ok to show beheadings of hostages. My opinion is they should have just thrown him into a wood chipper instead of wasting a perfectly good white sheet on that POS. I just wish I had a copy of the video of the raid. I'd give up a copy of Cleveland '70 for that.

I am fortunate enough to go to school in DC so when my buddy called me on sunday night to tell me Bin Laden was dead, the first thought was to go to the White House and celebrate with everyone. Though I had an exam at 8:30 on Monday, I said fuck it,,, which I do not regret. It was an unbelievable experience that i will never forget. I really haven't felt that patriotic in a long long time and being able to celebrate with everyone was truly amazing. Supposedly Obama saw the whole raid live and I'm sure the video still exists of the moment they actually killed the fucker. Hopefully one day we will be able to see his last moments...
Anyways, here is a picture of me from Sunday night. I actually got interviewed by a bunch of tv stations as well...

"Right". The US government tried to please the Islamic extremists by following their religious code and they even managed to fail at that....
First they spend 12-13 years chasing the guy with countless lives on both sides lost as a direct cause, then they find him, blow his head off, make up stories about him using women as human shields after the execution, and then they rush out to sea within hours to make sure that he's given the proper respects according to his religion.
I like that little twist right at the end there

This whole situation makes me sad. Acknowledging the good in the end to this man's terror spree is one thing and its all very well. There is a fine line between that, and actually full on celebrating the death of a human being. It's never a good thing that someone has to die in my opinion, but considering the circumstances I think it was probably necessary that they killed him. Not good, but necessary. If they hadn't who knows what he would have done next, and he was actually standing there armed and ready to shoot them! What were they to do? I think its an extremely sad necessity. I remember sitting before the TV the morning after it happened and I was quite saddened to see it all, especially those people cheering outside the White House. That was a bit over the top for me. His burial wasn't very heartening too, but I guess that digging a grave for him and letting the maggots feast on him wouldn't be too much prettier. A grave would just provide an opportunity for terrorists and Bin Laden supporters to reside there and make it their shrine too. I dunno, this whole situation is a symbol of what the world has come to. Its a horrible thing to have to resort to, and then to see people actually celebrating this mans death rather than acknowledging the death of his terror spree, and to actually use it to give themselves a sense of pride and patriotism is no comment. Tracking a diseased old man down after 10 years on the run and then cornering him and killing him isn't the hugest symbol of Americas power and capability as a nation IMO. It does negate what he could have done if he hadn't been found and thats something to be quite relieved about though.

The man was a mass murderer, and doesn't deserve to be shown any dignity whatsoever. Considering the amount of death, destruction, and misery that he caused, I feel that a celebration of his death is completely and totally appropriate. It brings back memories of the towers falling, people jumping to their deaths, and seeing the innocent children that were faced with growing up without a parent. His behavior went way beyond the point of anyone that I would consider to be a "human being", and I can't blame people for cheering or otherwise expressing their reaction to his death.

I hope these are the only virgins he will get on "paradise"
I think Obama is right: showing the photos will be something that will stimulate more hate and destruction. There's no point or advantage of showing these mass murder's brains.

Yes, but celebrating death has nothing to do with dignity. Celebrating death is awful and unappropriate. You are not in some tribe in Africa so that you don't know anything about life and celebrate death etc. The point is death isn't for celebrating. No offense.

Yes. Agreed.
Also, I think that a human being is a human being. He was a very bad person, but he was a person after all. There is no exception to be made there in my opinion, except for the fact that he needed to be killed for the greater good of it all. Death should never be celebrated, it should be fully accepted for what it is, a natural fact of life but it shouldn't be celebrated in my opinion.
No offense intended at all. I really like to consider other peoples opinions and I definitely respect a persons entitlement to have their opinion
