TV footage

Hi Vince,

I would like to ask for another memory effort from you.

Do you remember in any show some TV teams filming even for short and sparse periods?

Some TV footage from Bakersfield, 1970, has been circulating. Do you remember it?

Was it normal that regional or even national TVs attended the shows for collecting some images for some reports?

Thanks

I don't think it was Vince but I'm not sure anymore
Someone might give you a better answer to your question.

There's plenty of info here (credits to Porsche):

including Bajkers footage:

1970-08-21 Bakersfield Civic Auditorium - Bakersfield, CA
Source: 1st Generation
Length: 5:58
Quality: A (16mm Professional Recording)

This appears to be newsreel footage used for a story about the Miami trial. Jim Morrison is interviewed about the trial which was already in progress. Great quality. There is native audio for a portion of the footage ("When The Music's Over") as well as the interview. I've dubbed the silent portions with "Universal Mind" and "When The Music's Over" from a 1st gen copy of the Bakersfield stage recording.

Be it made clear - the only footage of the Doors for which I am the producer is the single roll of 16mm from the Cow Palace. I have not made copies of this material.

I do not remember any commercial or news cameras on stage in that show. People could not get on stage without my permission and I was not inclined to let people roam around after the accident in Santa Barbera.

This is not to say that there were no cameras in the audience - professional or otherwise. Out there it was not under my control and, because of stage lighting, sometimes difficult to see what was going on.

I cannot definitively say that no footage was made of that performance. I can suggest with some degree of certainty that there was no footage made from the stage.

Vince, can you elaborate more on what happened in Santa Barbara? Thanks very much for your time!

Santa Barbera was done on a platform set out on the green. I believe we were with Alice Cooper playing before. As part of their act Cooper split a pillow or some such filled with white feathers. POOF!!! All over the stage. We were ankle deep in feather - which the afternoon breeze began to distribute evenly, or not so, over the countryside. They got off and we did the final - moving Rays organ to the front and setting the mike for him and setting his stool. Everything ready and the doors go on stage. In the whiles some friend of Siddons decided to get on the platform behind the amps. He was "Being Cool" or "Grooving" or whatever was the description of his somewhat over-energetic body activity. While "Doing his thing" back and forth behind the amps he kicked out the main power for the entire left (Robby) side of the amps and everything went dead. You can imagine the look on Robby's face when complete silence met his every movement. I saw what ahppened and rushed over to get the plug back in and the amps again functioning. Then I turned my wrath on this hapless fellow. He defense was "Sorry" and then made the mistake of suggesting that Bill had given himpermission to get on stage.

He should never have done that. I made it clear in no uncertain terms that he was to get off or I would make him wish he did. He departed. After the show when Bill came up to ask "What happened. Vince" I told him that his Friend had kicked the plugs out. I also told him in no uncertain terms that no one - NO ONE, was on stage without my permission. With the exception of Paul and Bruce, I don't think this edict was ever breached again.

The upshot of all this was the introduction of twist-lock plugs on all the amp cords. Never again would they be kicked out, accidently or otherwise.

I think that was one of only two experiences wherein there was trouble on stage. It was bad enough to have a failure owing to mechanical or electrical fault but to have some fool cause the system to fail was horrible.

Oh Dear, They are going to kill Boromir. I suppose he got paid less because they knocked him off in the first reel. To bad. What a mess that man made of the story. For those who have not - curl up these long wintery nights with the 4 books - Five of them if you can wade through the Silmarillion which establishes the origins of Middle earch and the coming of the Elves, Dwarves, Hoibbits and men. But the Hobbit should be read first to lay the ground-work for the Trilogy.

You know, while being in a sort of considerate mood, 2013 is nearly over. Just think, in only 367 days it will be 2014. In 2015 I will be 80 years old. I have seen a Great war and many small ones, The coming of the jet, rockets and computers. From the dial phone to the touch tone - In fact, in 1960 I was working in Western Electric. There I tested a little more than 300 of the first 600 touch tone phones that went into trial service. I also tested the first of the "Bell Boy" beepers and the first modems that were used to let Delta and American Airlines to have a central ticketing for all flights. Huge things they were - 19" wide about 12" high and about 7" deep. Everything was individual transistors, resistos capacitors and other dodads all set on individual cards. They were heavy things, about 15 pounts. Imagine that sitting on your desk?

Organ builder by day and phone testor by night. Now we have computers controlling the key and stop functions of organs. How I miss the old days when you could see what was going on instead of trying to guess which electrons are going to what wrong direction.

Do you remember when you could hitchike almost anywhere without being molested or killed just for fun? People trusted people then. Life was good. The world has gone crazy. Kids being slaughtered by gon toting kids sponsored by the NRA. No one talks to anyone any more - It is all "Texting" or facebook or twitter. Does anyone write letters? It is so nice to express oneself to others, tell stories and experiences. Everything is reduced to a few lter and #'s. Hu nose wht any1 says. Has anyone read Ivanhoe? Treasure Island? The Last of the Mohigans? Heart of Darkness? How about Alice in Wonderland - "The time has come, the walrus said, to speak of many things..." How about a real poet - Mr. Frost: Whose woods these are I do not know. His house is in the village though... The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep"

Jim, A Poets? I like stand up comedy. Those aren't the beets john dropped on the floor it is me rolling around with laughter.

For now, guys

You should really put together a book of your life, all your experiences pre-Doors and all, including these insertions which undoubtedly make up for a great read. But don't get me wrong, not that without them it wouldn't be a joyous read...

So, thanks again for pulling out another part of the Doors saga. But let me be a bit thorough for now. I looked after the date and found the only Santa Barbara show which the Doors gave under your tenure was on June 28, 1968. Here the only supporting group were the Chambers Brothers (no mention of the Nazz or Alice Cooper on the poster). I know it can never be trusted completely, but with a review at hand, no malfunction is mentioned and I guess the writer would have had written about such a surprising event if it had happened at that show. Just for the record, and to be able to find out where it happened, are you sure it was Santa Barbara? Early '68?

Thanks again for your efforts Vince!

Trust me - It was Alice Cooper, He broke open a down pillow, covered the place with white feathers and this guy did indeed kick out the plugs. that this incident was not noted in any report is possible owing to my proximity to the network, realization of what had happened and instant reaction - Get the amps plugged in again and get that fool off the stage.

It is my recollection that feathers were one of Coopers trade mark moves along with his outlandish clothes and make-up.

Regardless of who or what was on stage, the point of it all was an incident which frightened me to the extreme when those amps went dead and the result of it all. Though a highlight of my experiences - it was not among the most pleasant.

Alright, we will find out when this happened if not on this date that I come up with but without even mentioning this story we wouldn't bother so thanks very much!

On the other hand I'm sure it was not the most pleasant experience of yours with the band but the way you solved this unexpected happening stands as an example. More of a positive story than negative in my mind. It could have been much worse if you are not that spot on. Then the crowd could have become a bit restless and demanding and...
