Upcoming 'L.A. Woman' 40th Anniversary Release (Part 2)

So it looks like no Matrix (again) this year. Whatever they do, it should be handled as an audiophile release. A London Fog book set would be a good idea. We don't really have much info, and fewer photos, from those very early days and it would make up for any sound quality/length concerns.

That certainly makes sense. Since Jeff didn't mention anything about Matrix shows, we probably won't hear/see the masters this year (doubt they will be released even next year).
If they had both reels of the London Fog show, I would say it could make a good CD. They should combine the show with Matrix, but judging from Jeff's post, it will be probably be a standalone release.
My opinion is that all their shows should be considered as an audiophile releases, but I can't remember anything with a great booklet and photos, than Felt Forum release. After that, Vancouver, was a big letdown considering the info, photos, let alone the booklet.
They are really embarrassing themselves with "The Year Of The Doors".

Just to balance the scales a little bit, I thought Vancouver was a worthy release for the nice upgrade in quality alone.... and I'd welcome a Seattle release too.

The downside to recent developments is that they seem to be rejecting "deluxe" editions in favor of budget albums. If anything deserved a nice set, it was all the LAW material -- they have plenty of photos from that era, a bunch of audio, it's a classic album, sound quality is great, there was even a DVD, etc. Yet, Jeff says they couldn't come to an arrangement for a nice deluxe edition so they chose to go with an uninspired budget release. Is this the future of all Doors albums from BMA or was LAW a special circumstance? Will there be enough "demand" for a London Fog photo book and CD or will it be slapped into a cardboard sleeve without liner notes? Can we expect the same with the Matrix, if and whenever it's released? (Just thinking out loud.)

I thought that they had reached an agreement, and that the deluxe edition was subsequently cancelled due to insufficient pre-order sales. Jeff announced that it was also to be available through Rhino Handmade, which hasn't been the case with previous Doors releases. That makes it seem as though everything was in place for a deluxe edition. They then started taking pre-orders without having provided a track listing, and that's when things went south.

What a shame it would be if the London Fog and Matrix releases are impacted by the poor handling of the aborted LAW deluxe edition, especially considering that they apparently have quite a few London Fog photos.

Well, if that is the case, then Jeff botched the LA Woman box set in a significant way. A pre-sale for an expensive set where no content is listed is going to be a tough sell for any act. Had there been a tentative tracklisting with a few CDs worth of the outtakes that they knew they had (with a disclaimer that actual songs/content was subject change), perhaps more orders would have been processed. As already pointed out, there is a lot of LA Woman outtake material in good sound, photos, and other available information. Could have been one kick-ass package. Instead, the hardcore fan-base gets the shaft. Well done management!

The Matrix "can" keeps getting kicked down the road. It's almost been 4 years since the epic FAIL 2CD release from bootlegs. Yet that 2CD is still commercially available. WTF? They should pull it from the market.

Good point.

Though I still feel the mega deluxe LA Woman release was axed because the outtakes and demos just aren't all that compelling (read: good). The one disc of stuff they did give us is really flat.

I think it would be cool to hear everything they've got, but the little bit they've put out does not inspire confidence that it would be worth playing more than once or twice.

That's how I feel about it. The proposed L.A. Woman set should, and probably will, be pushed aside for the far more interesting Matrix, Fog and Hollywood Bowl.

He's definitely singing "I just got into town about an hour ago" in the alternate version. Can't hear "took" or "downer" anywhere. Same with Take 1.

If the album version sounds like anything resembling words id say its "i did get into town". nowhere do i hear "just". but the outtakes do sound remarkably like "took a little downer". Is it possible he's not really saying anything, or just blurring the words enough to be completely ambiguous. Jim did sing about the junk man and the 'h bomb' so he could have been singing about sedatives.

...just a side note, when jeff posted the 5cd tracklist he has La Woman take 1 as being incomplete...he has take 3 as being the first full complete recording of the song...i wonder if the take 1 you mentioned above is really take 3 ?

Interesting. Will this app only be available for the iPad or can you get it for the iPhone and iPod Touch as well. I don't have an iPad, but I may have to look into getting one.

Holzman's comments about how apps may change how artists approach albums and how future albums may be experienced in varying ways are interesting. Holzman's has always been on the forefront of emerging technologies, and he has embraced them. Traditionalists may reject these technologies, but as we move into the future CDs will become novelties as vinyl has. As Holzman pointed out, the current music market is geared toward singles. iTunes has recreated the album in digital form, but they don't have the same impact that CD and vinyl albums did in the past. The album isn't an art form the way it used. It's more of a collection of song geared toward the digital market. Many if not most albums have deluxe editions with bonus tracks which trivializes the album as an art form. Album apps with multiple ways to experience the album may remedy that and become the new album art form.

As much as I am stuck in my ways and still do not have an ipod or purchased any songs via itunes or where-ever and only listen to music on CD's Cassettes and vinyl I can't help but agree.
