Ben Caplan live in Studio Q

Stranger....totally amazing...a bit of Jim's deeper vocal range and dark lyrics...and then a bit of Tom Waits' insanity...but Ben Caplan is an original indeed.

Stranger

Written by: Ben Caplan

When I was a child, my mother would tuck me into bed
And each night as she kissed me, these are the words that she said:
She said don't go to bed with stranger, don't play with the dead
Always keep your wits sharp, like an axe inside the shed

When I was just a school a schoolboy, my father, he spoke unto me
He said, boychick, my son, don't trust anyone, and remember that nothing is free
And the world is full of strangers. The world is full of dread.
The world is full of sharpned wits, and millions of tears you will shed.

When I was a young man, my professor at University said:
Advice is corrupting
Don't ever be trusting
Don't show your emotion
Human suffering is an ocean
And it's dark at the bottom of the sea

And there's no such thing as a stranger
We're all equally backwards and wrong
Sharpen axes not wits
Bones are broken by sticks
And you'll never be free 'till you're strong

Well young men grow older
And the world gets colder
Though it never was warm to begin
Don't let down your guard
For the reaper works hard
And he will not take pause till you're dead.

Well, now I am old and I'm rusty
My troubles like sand on the beach
They can't be calculated
I always have waited
For something just out of reach.

And I to myself am a stranger
My heart is of iron and lead
My world is resounding
With miseries abounding
There's only one thing to be said.

Grateful Dead

A classic concert, from waay back, from 1967...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oTNrhNGLyw

My favorite version of Cold rain and snow, by the way...

Enjoy!

1. Morning Dew
2. New Potato Caboose
3. It hurts me too
4. Cold rain and snow
5. Turn on your lovelight
6. Beat it on down the line
7. That's it for the other one

On October 22nd, 1967, the Winterland arena was filled once again, this time for the Marijuana Defense Benefit.

Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother & Holding Company and The Grateful Dead were on the bill.

The crowd fell silent as the lights dimmed and The Grateful Dead took the stage. Rising out of the silence -- in mono for all but the last minute of the song, Garcia brings out the opening riff of Morning Dew.

The band falls behind him, with Pigpen contributing some solid low-lying organ. Jerry voice is young and fresh, and he plays a bit with the words, "no you didn't, no, no, no you didn't."

here check this out, this the extended performance of 'transmission' from the joy division biopic control. Its a dam good impersonation of joy division but let it play out - my girlfriend pointed out the guy 'doing Ian Curtis' ends up sounding a lot like JDM, what do you think.

Joni Mitchell - Urge For Going (Live In-Studio 1966)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLu2-gG68S0

So good...bless Joni.

Seeing Tom Rush tonight, who was instrumental in furthering Joni and many other artists careers by covering their songs & recording them before Joni or the likes of Jackson Browne ever put their songs to wax.

This one has opening riffs that remind of the heavy guitar of Neil Young...then it growls into a fine hard Americana rock ...a rather dark tale

Quite poerful and moving... especial more so coming from a Metal band -- music I would normally dismiss as just too much noise. (Though I have to admit that Disturbed's melodic form of metal is actually listenable, and good, to my ears on several tracks I've heard of late)

Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" 03/28/16
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk7RVw3I8eg

Paul Simon has heard Disturbed‘s cover of his Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound of Silence” — and he enjoyed it enough to reach out to singer David Draiman and tell him so.

Draiman shared word of his interaction with Simon after the band delivered a performance of “The Sound of Silence” during its March 28 appearance on Conan. Simon saw the show and sent Draiman an email shortly after, saying, “Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks.” Understandably enthused by Simon’s encouragement, Draiman posted a screenshot of the email on the band’s Facebook page, as well as his response.

“Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words,” wrote Draiman. “We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/ us and we are eternally grateful.”

Not content to reach out privately, Simon signed off on a post through his own social media accounts, directing fans to footage of the Conan performance (which you can check out above) and calling it a “wonderful rendition.”

The studio version of Disturbed’s “The Sound of Silence” cover appears on the band’s most recent release, Immortalized, which debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. upon arrival in stores last August. The album marks Disturbed’s fifth consecutive chart-topping debut.
