Don't forget the classic version by Gene Autry.....sweet It was first sold to Gene Autry by Stan Jones for Gene to record. Gene was likely th e first to record it.

A touching scene from one of his fine movies--1949--singing the song while an old friend lies near death....

Thank you for another precious suggestion.
You have to understand some basic and embarassing ignorance of my part regarding the classics. There's a price to pay for not being an American. But well, there's a reward for being a Portuguese as we are also culturally a very rich country...

So touching this allegory in such a dramatic scene. Great Cinema and great Music can really mix to touch deeply your senses

These scenes reminded me the long afternooms seeing all those American westerns in glorious B&W TV. Early childhood... I may have forgot the name of most of those films (some I "had" to keep: Stagecoach, Duel in the sun, The man who killed Liberty Valance, El Dorado, Rio Bravo, The Searchers, Shane, etc) but I never forgot the great feeling of discovering those great wide spaces of the Wild West and those violent stories bringing such convincing human dramas and strong feelings. "The West is the best" Not that strange that Jim considered at some point of his life to write scripts about westerns.

You're right it's one of those songs we can imagine Jim sing.
And, Jeff likes it.
It's funny the way sometimes he uses to confirm certain things.
I remember once Greg joking about the existence of a tape with Ghost Riders in the Sky and I hear it from the grapevine. Well, here's the first one. I suppose the second one will be a joke to stay.

Don't get your hopes up about hearing Ghost Riders on the DVD with Jim on vocals. I have a feeling it's a new recording to show how they came up with the idea for Riders. Would be nice if they had one with Jim. If they did then why wouldn't that be included on the 2 cd set? When Jeff said he heard it, did he actually confirm that it's from 1970 and with Jim?

You're right. They have mentioning "She smells so nice" and "Rock me". It's strange to think they wouldn't give a especial focus on this one if they had it with Jim on vocals. Jeff's mention about this song is in fact quite dubious.
But I still have some hope:

Wasn't "Ghost Riders" listed on the same DVD track list that included random songs like "Touch Me" and "People Are Strange"? I think we can safely discount that one. Jeff's comments about "Ghost Riders" was in reference to the LAW outtakes being prepared for the super deluxe edition, not the DVD/Blu-ray. He said this about it: "As for the 'Riders On The Storm' questions, I think it's a whole different take, but I don't know for sure. One thing I can tell you is I've HEARD The Doors doing 'Ghost Riders In The Sky' during the session, so THAT'S pretty damn mindblowingly cool! I'll ask and advise soon on the ROTS issue." I'm guessing it's just an impromptu jam. Maybe less than a minute, or they would have probably put it on the 2CD set.

I agree that it makes sense that what they have it's no more than some part of a long jam.

About Riders, songfacts says this:
"This evolved out of a jam session when the band was messing around with "Ghost Riders In The Sky,"."

I suppose their source could be from something told by one of the 3 guys.
For instance there's a Robbie interview conducted for classicrockrevisited.com in March 2002 by Jeb Wright:

What was your input on “Riders On The Storm?”

Robby Krieger : We were just jamming one day and we were playing “Ghost Riders In The Sky.” You know that one? Da dum da dum da dum da dum da dum dum dum dum dum -- kind of a Duane Eddie guitar sound. All of the sudden Jim started singing, “Ghost riders in the sky/Riders on the storm. It kind of evolved from that. It is kind of the same thing with ghost riders and riders on the storm.

You guys stole it from “Ghost Riders In The Sky!”

Robby Krieger : (laughing) I don’t know about that but it was the inspiration!

Hardly, since Riders was already being rehearsed in the Rothchild's sessions.
But we're lucky since we can now listen to the storm suggestion and (so it has been said by Jeff) the genesis of Mr. Mojo Rísin section in L.A. Woman.

I would love to know where are and what was taped in the Rothchild sessions.
