Studio vs Live

We're lucky to have former Doors road manager Vince Treanor here to answer fan questions and share some of his memories. Ask Vince about anything related to the equipment The Doors used, stage set-ups, specific concerts, the band after Jim's death, and working on the Oliver Stone movie.

Studio vs Live

Post by Dougs »

Hey Vince

Was there much difference between Jims performances in studio then when he played live?

By this I mean was Jim hold some back in studio or did he push his vocal performance to the limit?

Putting on the brakes

When Jim performed in public, there was an audience. There were real people who would, could and did react to his actions and words.

In studio this was not possible. THe Audiences was behind a soundproof glass wall and Jim sang with his eyes closed generally.

If you listen to the recordings of Jim, regardless of the album, I don't think you can say he held back anything. He liked to sing. He liked to hear the results of his efforts. He worked with the group, when the mood moved him, to achieve a good album.

On stage, he could make the singing of songs into a theatrical event ranging from the sensational to the bizarre. One could not tell which it would be beforehand. There was usualy plenty to talk about afterward.

Even in studio, there was body movement, hand and arm movement and a certain "Excitement". The stage was the place to put the actions and the words together.

He might not perform well in public, but he did not "Hold Back" in studio or stage.
