Recently I've been going back and listening to loads of D21c recordings for the first time in years. I've been enjoying it quite a bit and during this time, I came across the following.
So in 1986, Jim Carroll taught a class at Naropa University in Boulder Colorado. During this class, he describes writing songs. Some of the songs he mentions should be familiar to anyone who followed Ray and Robby in the early 2000s...
Sherlock Holmes
American Express
Shapeshifter
Cops Talk
So yeah, those are all what were going to be D21c songs and it turns out they date back to about 1986. I found it interesting that these songs not only dated back to the 80s, but as you'll find out... he was working with Ray on the songs back then. He goes into a little depth about the writing process (he wrote the words and Ray composed all the music). Here are two links to transcripts of the section where he specifically mentions theses songs and Ray:

And even more interesting, here's a link to a recording of Jim both speaking and playing the songs.

Skip ahead to the 46 minute 15 second mark to hear where he begins to talk about "a couple of songs he wrote with Manzarek". You'll hear him describe the songs and what really thrilled me- you'll hear early versions of the songs.
Apologies if this doesn't really belong in this forum but I thought it was pretty cool and I have no clue where the fuck else I'd share it

This is awesome, thank you! It really is a damn shame none of their "new" songs made it onto any of the official live releases; I really enjoy them and I loved D21C.

So what were all their songs for the album supposed to be? I've heard audience recordings of "Cops Talk", "American Express", "Forever", and "Eagle in a Whirlwind". Are there recordings of "Shapeshifter" and "Sherlock Holmes"? And are there any other songs/recordings?
