books on 60's rock and culture

Discussions of other bands, including D21C/ROTS should go here.

books on 60's rock and culture

Post by Roughie »

What are some good ones, or ones you own? Not so much interested in books on just one band or specific performers.

I have

Laurel Canyon - The Inside Story of Rock n Rolls Legendary Neighbourhood
I Want to Take You Higher - The Psychedelic Era 1965 - 1969
Turning On - Rocking in the late sixties (probably the best of the three)
Starting pre production on a sketch show. More soon.

Positively4th Street:
The Lives and Times of Joan Baez,
Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina
and Richard Farina

by David Hajdu

...more than a Dylan & friends book...a book of the times.

Here is a review at the Amazon site...it sounds absolutely engrossing
and it looks like my next book. Anyone read it?

Riot On Sunset Strip - Domenic Priore: the story of the Sunset Strip scene, excellent book, packed full of info

Ready, Steady, Go! - Shawn Levy: another good one, about the London scene in the Sixties.

Turn, Turn, Turn and Eight Miles High - Richie Unterberger: the 2-part story of folk rock in the Sixties and Seventies

True Adventures of the Rolling Stones - Stanley Booth: although it is basically about one band, he gives a good feel for the times, one of the best rock books I've read; the author had total access, traveling with the Stones on the '69 tour and living the life

Storming Heaven - Jay Stevens: the history of LSD, essential backstory of the Sixties
