Ringo is the most luckiest musician in the world. In the right place at the right time but I would never mention him on the same page with George or John. In Rolling Stone last year I read an interview where he proved to be such an incompetent person musically, throwing punches at Dylan that I thought I'm reading Sarah Palin's words.

Ringo was not lucky. He was considered the top drumming talent in the UK in the early sixties and the Beatles sought out Ringo. He turned them down initially, but relented as the Beatles rep grew.
He was an integral part of the Beatle's sound, as much as the other Beatles. How many rock songs can be recognized by the drum track alone & by itself.

Ringo's high days of drumming--Rain, She Said She Said, A Day In The Life are what drummers work to attain in their dreams, & refer to as the greatest moments of rock drumming, but rarely achieve. To call him inept (maybe your words are lost in the translation), is likely in jest. He may have the ego of a member of the greatest rock band in history, which leads to some silly quotes, but Ringo himself is quite humble about his abilities and wonders at times how he ever came up with the iconic drum lines in songs such as RAIN.

RAIN...no one but the left handed Ringo had a fill like that...very hard to duplicate. It developed because he played left handed on a right handed drum kit

Anyway I agree with James. I think Ringo is very talented and his only problem was thta he was behind 3 geniuses.
Although not being a Beatles fan I always felt that these guys were 4 geniuses.
But and I admit it's kind of tortuos thinking I always ranked them.

John would be 1st, Paul 2nd, George 3rd and Ringo 4th in terms of "genius ranking".

Yeah, those tunes James are definitely well made drumwise but I never really ranked them among the very best ones of the modern music/rock and roll history. What in my view elevated them to heavenly stages are the merits of John, George and Paul. The Beatles were never meant to be a band with a really dominant drummer, being melody-driven, oriented. Talentwise where we should place Ringo, where he really stands if we judge his work amongst the ones from Art Blakley, Elvin Jones thru Ginger Baker to John Bonham, not to mention Keith Moon to mention some of the really great ones of top of my head..? I wouldn't say a bit he was ahead of his time.

Edit: Almost forgot, just compare Densmore with Ringo and you will see what I meant. Obviously JD brought even more merits to his band then to what Ringo brought to the Beatles despite the fact as you said that the rest of those guys sought out for him.

I agree about the great ones you mention. Other great ones are Mitch Mitchell, Nick Mason, Levon Helm.

I think what makes a good drummer is how his style distinguishes him in his chosen genre. And John was no more of sonic importance to The DOORS than Ringo was to The Beatles.

Ringo had a style that was unique to rock...a sound & beat that is unmistakeable. It was said that one could place his steady beat against a metronome and he woud never miss a beat.

Lennon said that you could count on one hand the times that a song session needed even a second take because of a mistsep by Ringo.

I would have to disagree about Densmore being more to the DOORS than Ringo was to The Beatles.

It is a really good comparison. Call it fate. The DOORS would not have been the DOORS without each unique member. The same can be said forthe Beatles.

Neither band would have been the same without their unique and talented drummers. It is sometimes as much about the character and personality of a band member combined with that undefinable something that they bring to the sonic mix.

Ringo and John are KEY elements, and I honestly do not believe either band would have been the same, or have had the historical Rock impact without the driving force of their indispensable "rhythm section"--the drummers....of course I would say that because the Beatles had Paul, they had an even more complete rhythm section.

How many times do we hear accolades for the bass line in a DOORS song? Whereas Paul is considered one of the top ten bassists of all time. I'd say in the top FIVE.

Maybe Ray is just a little jealous that John has kept himself looking good....and for trying to keep the spirit of Jim & the DOORS alive by not selling out.

SF...is that your handiwork? John has that phantom look just like in real life...JD is never there when the other two are gathered together, but his spirit always is there, along with Jim.

A nice touch would be to add a ghost of Jim's face behind the whole scene...SF?

It was a photo taken on film for an LA newspaper (L.A.Times????) and they were all taken individually and then then then put into the photo together later. Obviously not much care was taken as John looks enormous. Also I think from memory it was old film stock too, hence the trippy colours.

I think Ray could flatten John and Robby, but John probably has more rage in his heart.... so you never know.

Ringo is an amazing drummer. He has an awesome feel, definitely a big part of the Beatles sound. Ringo quite often would record drum overdubs, something I don't think a lot of bands were doing in the mid 60s. Rubber Soul has a few crackers.

George Martin really knew how to capture a drum sound too. Tight, compressed, but very musical compression.... Amazing stuff.
