A new book of Nick Drake's life and work is to be published, with a deluxe edition featuring five previously unreleased recordings. Nick Drake: Remembered for a While will be the first ever authorised Drake book and has been compiled and edited by his sister Gabrielle Drake over a six-year period. Along with a standard hardback edition, the book will be available as a signature boxed edition which includes a 10in vinyl record featuring the rare tracks.
The new recordings are taken from a lost 1969 BBC John Peel session, recorded while Drake was writing his classic second album, Bryter Layter. The songs featured are all versions of well-known tracks: Time of No Reply, River Man, Three Hours, Bryter Layter and Cello Song. Cally Callomon, head of Nick Drake's estate, said: "Listening to these tracks show Nick at his most intimate and unembellished. It's as close as we'll ever get to being in a room alone with Nick's songs."
Gabrielle Drake said: "Nick is evanescent, yet ever-present to me: inextricably woven into the fabric of my life, yet rarely appearing in sharp focus – except in his music. Listening to it, I am still overwhelmed by the immediacy of his presence: by melancholy and delight, by amusement (because Nick could be very funny), by bafflement and grief, by love."
The book, published by John Murray, will contain extracts from Drake's letters to his parents and a selection of handwritten lyrics, including some to songs for which the recordings have never been found. Also included in the book will be contributions from the likes of Drake's string arranger Robert Kirby and his producer Joe Boyd. Its publication marks 40 year since the singer died from an overdose of antidepressants. It will be published on 6 November.
