Discussions of other bands, including D21C/ROTS should go here.

RIP Rob Grill (Grass Roots)

Post by jim4371 »

Just heard news from Domenic Priore that Rob Grill has died. Details are still coming in (Wikipedia doesn't even say he's dead yet). I was hoping to see the Grass Roots the first time with the Turtles later this summer, guess that won't be happening. aagh

Good ol' band...even if they did borrow Arthur Lee's band name. Best thing to happen though...LoVE was a much better name.

I can't find any news except he had a serious fall and critical, so that would be sad news indeed about his passing.

Here is a wonderful vid of one of my favorite tunes by the Grass Roots...

ack.. well Domenic Priore has retracted this report. Apparently Rob is still alive, just in very serious condition.

Here is one priceless comment from a 70's DJ from KLSS in Mason City Iowa about interviewing the Grass Roots!..."Grass" seeds and all!

Ray Arthur · Fresno, California
I never got to see them live, although in 1973 I interviewed them at 11:00 PM on the air after their concert. I was the 8 PM to Midnight DJ at 100,000 watt KLSS in Mason City, Iowa. The Grass Roots had played a college concert and stopped by the station...after. They all introduced themselves, then they all left the studio, except Rob. As I interviewed Rob the rest of the band dissappeared, literally, roaming around the vacant two story radio station. Rob and I talked for about 20 minutes and the only thing I remember is him doing a mocking impression of Cory Wells singing Never Been to Spain. At the time I thought it was pretty disrespectful, if for no other reason than Three Dog Night was the bigger act. I found out later that he and Wells had started out together in Los Angeles. Anyway, interview's over I put MacArthur P...ark on the turntable (7 minutes) and rounded up everyone and escorted them out of the building. At 7:00 AM the next morning I was called into the GM's office. All the Red "On Air" lights were missing from all the studios, AND, there were Marijuana seeds in the News Director's ash tray. I explained that I didn't do drugs, however, I did do a great interview with the Grass Roots the night before and they all seemed VERY happy. The G M, Dale Lau, who I still affectionately refer to as 'that sonofabitch that fired me' (not that I hold a grudge) smiled and said, "Just get out!" We found the 6 red light bulbs in the downstairs ladies room under the sink. Never got a chance to meet up with Rob to tell him that story.
