The Who: Tommy

Post by silentseason »

This is still one of my favorite albums. The plot (if you can call it that) may be confusing and dated, but Townshend really put some genuine passion and thought into it and it is still thought provoking and just flat out quality rock music. Kudos to Kit Lambert for pushing for Pete to follow through and for making the vocals the most prevalent aspect of this project. The up front harmonies are great, almost Beach Boy like in some ways. It still amazes me that a group with a reputation for being essentially a singles group and just raucous hell raisers could pull off something as subtle and intelligent as Tommy. They did and with 'Thomas' birth (Keith Moon always referred to it as Thomas) the Who entered a new realm. Thankfully there are plenty of recorded concerts but I would give anything to have seen a full 2+ hour Who concert from mid '69 to the end of '70 when they played the full on version live.

But most importantly for the music, the album still evokes an emotional response and that is what makes music timeless and great.

Anyway here is a song near and dear to me "Underture". It may be a bit long, but the accompanying slideshow encompasses all eras from the Who's history and is fun to watch.

Great band indeed.

Qudrophenia, Who Sell Out, Who's Next, Who Are You? So many great albums!
