The Civil Wars are a two-time Grammy nominated duo composed of singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White.[1] The two band members met during a Nashville, Tennessee songwriting session in 2008. After recording a live performance album and a four song EP, their full length album, Barton Hollow, was released in 2011 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart.[2]

According to the duo's web site, their performance at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Georgia on April 8, 2009 was recorded and released as a free Internet download called Live at Eddie's Attic.[5] In November, the duo released a digital extended play album, produced by Charlie Peacock, called Poison & Wine [6] and the title song was featured on the TV show, Grey's Anatomy.[7]
In December 2010 the duo was featured in Paste Magazine's "Best of What's Next" column.[8]
2011 to the present
In 2011, The Civil Wars performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,[9] at the Sundance Film Festival and ASCAP's Music Cafe.[10] Their album Barton Hollow was released and sold 25,000 copies in its first week[11] and remained at No. 1 on the iTunes chart for 9 days.[12] The Civil Wars appeared on NPR's Weekend All Things Considered and were featured in The Los Angeles Times.[13][14] They appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and their "Barton Hollow" video was played on VH1.[15][16] They were nominated for a CMT Award in the Duo Video of the Year category and featured on the cover of Pollstar Magazine.[17][18] The Civil Wars appeared a second time on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in May,[19] were the opening act for singer Adele's North American tour,[20] were nominated for Americana Music Awards in the Duo/Group of the Year and Emerging Artist of the Year categories,[21] and headlined a benefit concert for victims of the 2011 Alabama tornado.[22] In June, The Guardian featured them as their 'New Band of the Day'.[23]
In the summer of 2011 the duo performed on the Los Angeles radio station KCRW, opened several shows for Emmylou Harris, and performed at Rhode Island's Newport Folk Festival.[24][25][26] In September they rejoined Adele UK Tour and were nominated for a Country Music Association Award in the Vocal Duo of the Year category.[27][28] They performed on the UK television show Later... Live in October [29] and their Barton Hollow album debuted at No. 22 on the UK Download Chart and No. 54 on the UK Albums Chart.[30][31]
In October the duo was featured in The New York Times, appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman[32][33] and was featured in Interview Magazine.[34] They received the Vanguard Award at the 49th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards in November. [35]
The duo appeared on the cover of the November issue of Nashville Scene [36] and were a topic of conversation on the radio talk show Sound Opinions. [37] The Civil Wars released their Holiday single Tracks in the Snow on 10" white vinyl and digital and iTunes featured the B-side "O Come O Come Emmanuel", as their Holiday Single of the Week.[38]
On November 30, 2011, Barton Hollow was nominated for Grammys in the Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance categories. Numerous publications noted that The Civil Wars were snubbed a Best New Artist nomination by The Grammys.[39][40][41]
The Civil Wars made their Grand Ole Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium on December 17, 2011, where they were introduced by Emmylou Harris and also performed "The First Noel" a cappella with Harris. The duo received a standing ovation from the Opry audience and were asked to perform a third song for their debut.[42]
Barton Hollow was included on multiple Best Albums of 2011 lists, including NPR Music, Paste Magazine, American Songwriter, Rough Trade, Amazon.com, Time Magazine, iTunes, Huffington Post, Associated Press, The Tennesseean, AllMusic.com, The Wall Street Journal and more.
Entertainment Weekly, Yahoo Music and USA Today named The Civil Wars Best New Artists and Breakout Stars of 2011.[57][58]
To date in the US, The Civil Wars have sold over 265,000 copies of their debut album, Barton Hollow, along with over 350,000 digital tracks, according to Nielsen Soundscan.[59]
