Having grown up with the DEAD I have always had a soft spot for Jerry Garcia and Co.

Off shoots of the band such as New Riders of the Purple Sage...well not really off shoots...New Riders opened for Grateful Dead and Jerry played pedal steel on NROPS....

The Dead had a following because they were really smart salesmen besides being wonderful musicians. The may have been the first to actively suport audience recording and widespread bootlegging. There must be thousands of quality bootlegs circulating. A station here in Maine had a Wednesday Night Dead Night...playing a different live bootleg every week.
The dead spawned notably, PHISH, and the last PHISH summer festival was held in Maine and was a rousing success.

The first Dead albums were my faves...notably The Grateful Dead 1967, Anthem Of the Sun 1968, Aoxomoxoa 1969, LIVE/DEAD 1969, & a real favorite of mine--"American Beauty" 1970. The 1970 release "Workingman's Dead" sparked the first real Deadhead cult movement.


The Dead are considered maybe the first cult band stating in the 60's SF.

In a BAM review of a Dead show in Irvine, California, on April 13, 1985, the author wrote: "So-called adventuresome people who dig Black Flag probably wouldn't be caught alive at a Grateful Dead show". Ginn subsequently wrote to BAM to explain that he and other members of Black Flag had attended the concert being reviewed, that he had attended many Dead shows and that the Grateful Dead was his favorite band. I lost track of them in the 70's, but apparently, tens of thousands did not.

Great GREAT band...and Jerry WAS A TOP TIER GUITARIST & completely unique in his style of fingerpicking.
