Meg Baird is an American musician originally from New Jersey and currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is best known as a founding member and lead female vocalist for the Philadelphia folk rock band Espers. In 2007, Baird released her first solo LP Dear Companion on Drag City. She has also collaborated with sister Laura in The Baird Sisters, and appeared as a backing vocalist on Bonny 'Prince' Billy's 2007 EP Ask Forgiveness. [1] She also appeared as a backing vocalist on Sharon Van Etten's second album, Epic. As a solo artist, she has toured with Bert Jansch,[2] James Blackshaw, Micah Smaldone, Sharron Kraus and others.

Her vocal style has often been compared to that of Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny and Pentangle's Jacqui McShee,[3][4][5] although she has herself cited Celia Humphris of Trees as the more personally influential member of the 1960s and 70's UK folk scene.[citation needed]

She appeared on a 7" compilation entitled Meet the Philly Elite, featuring touring partners Kurt Vile and Jack Rose, as well as US Girls. In 2011 Baird released her second solo album, Seasons on Earth, receiving favorable reviews from The Wire, Allmusic, Spin, NPR, and others. Upon hearing Meg Baird’s Drag City solo debut, Dear Companion, I was immediately reminded of the first time I listened to the Numero Group’s January release of Catherine Howe’s What A Beautiful Place. Both albums initially come across so delicately that you have to really stretch out to fully grasp their artistry. Folkies, do pay attention.

Baird, most recognizable through her Baird Sisters output, and as a member of the Philadelphia psych-folk outfit, Espers, strikes out on her own here with (not surprisingly) great results. Maintaining the vibe of her work with sister Laura, and the quieter moments with Espers, Baird, solo, has set herself up as an artist to keep an eye on with interest. Espers is a psych folk band from Philadelphia that is part of the emerging indie folk scene. They formed in 2002 as a trio of singer-songwriter Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and Brooke Sietinsons but later expanded to a sextet including Otto Hauser, Helena Espvall and Chris Smith. Their music is reminiscent of late-sixties British folk as well as many contemporary folk acts such as Six Organs of Admittance. Most of the band's members have also featured on recordings by a number of other folk artists such as Nick Castro and Vashti Bunyan and as a result have become an important part of the psych-folk revival.

They released their self-titled debut in 2004 on Locust Music and followed that with an album of cover songs, The Weed Tree, in 2005. This release featured the band's versions of songs by artists as diverse as Nico, The Durutti Column and Blue Öyster Cult. In 2006 the band released their third full-length album, II (presumably so called because it was their second album of original material), on Drag City Records. Their fourth album, III, was released on October 20, 2009.
